General nitrogen/P2O5/K2O reference: ICAR-CPCRI-cited adult-palm figures (~100:40:140 g N:P2O5:K2O/palm/year), age-scaled using a KITE Agro planning assumption where no official year-by-year table is confirmed — always shown as an editable, labelled figure, not silently invented. Carrier-fertilizer calculations use standard fertilizer-grade nutrient percentages and recompute every affected row together whenever a carrier changes (see "How was this calculated?" on the compatibility panel). Organic-input values are approximate defaults, clearly variable by source; first-year availability is estimated, not the full nutrient content. Compatibility rules are method-specific and symmetric; anything without a cited or reasoned rule returns "insufficient reliable information," never a default "compatible." Cost/purchase figures round bag counts upward only, never the agronomic application quantity.

Areca Fertilizer & Compatibility — Answered

How much fertilizer does an adult areca palm require?

A commonly cited ICAR-CPCRI general reference for a fully bearing adult palm is about 100g nitrogen, 40g P2O5 and 140g K2O per year, alongside roughly 12kg FYM/compost and 12kg green leaf manure. This is a general starting point, not a farm-specific prescription — soil and leaf testing should guide the final programme.

How much urea, SSP and MOP are needed per areca tree?

Using the general reference, roughly 217g urea, 250g SSP and 233g MOP per adult palm per year is a common starting calculation — but this changes the moment you substitute any carrier, since this calculator recalculates all three together.

Can DAP replace SSP?

Yes, but DAP also supplies nitrogen (unlike SSP), so the urea quantity must be reduced to avoid exceeding your nitrogen target. This calculator does that automatically.

Why must urea be reduced when DAP is used?

DAP is roughly 18% nitrogen. Keeping the full urea quantity AND adding DAP for phosphorus applies substantially more nitrogen than your target.

Can MOP be replaced with SOP?

Yes — SOP is often preferred in sandy or coastal soil to avoid chloride buildup, and also supplies sulphur. The required quantity changes because SOP's K2O% differs from MOP's.

Can fertilizer be mixed with FYM?

Applying both in the same field programme is standard practice. The caution is about storage, not field application.

Can urea and magnesium sulphate be mixed?

Urea is strongly hygroscopic — mixed and stored with a sulphate salt it can draw in moisture. Fine to apply both in the same season; mix immediately before application.

Can urea and lime be applied together?

No — mixing urea with lime causes rapid ammonia loss. Apply at least 2–3 weeks apart.

Can micronutrients be mixed with phosphate fertilizer?

DAP and SSP can react with zinc, iron or copper sulphate in a concentrated mix, reducing micronutrient availability. Apply a few days apart.

Why should boron be used carefully?

Boron has an unusually narrow margin between a deficient dose and a toxic one. Don't increase the dose without a verified recommendation.

Can poultry manure reduce the urea requirement?

Poultry manure contains meaningful nitrogen, so accounting for its estimated available nitrogen can let you reduce chemical urea accordingly.

Can biochar be applied to areca trees?

As a soil amendment, not a complete fertilizer — properties vary hugely with feedstock, and no fixed nutrient value should be assumed without a lab analysis.

Should raw biochar be charged before application?

Generally yes — raw biochar can temporarily tie up soil nutrients. It's usually better charged or blended with compost/FYM/vermicompost first.

Is wood ash suitable for areca?

Only from a clean, untreated wood source — never painted, treated, laminated wood or mixed waste. Even clean wood ash is strongly alkaline and should be used cautiously.

Can wood ash be used in alkaline soil?

Generally no — wood ash is alkaline itself and can push already-high pH higher. This calculator shows a blocking caution above pH 7 or in calcareous soil.

Can wood ash and urea be mixed?

No — wood-ash alkalinity promotes ammonia loss from urea, the same interaction as lime. Apply separately.

How many fertilizer bags are required for my farm?

This calculator converts your whole-farm requirement into full bags, always rounding upward — it never rounds the actual application quantity, only the bags you need to buy.

Should fertilizer be divided into two or three applications?

Split application is generally safer than one large annual dose. This calculator lets you split into 2, 3, 4 or custom rounds without changing the annual total.

What is the difference between immediate field mixing and storage compatibility?

Some combinations are fine mixed and applied immediately but unsafe if pre-mixed and stored. This calculator's checker distinguishes by application method.

Why is a soil test important?

General references are starting points for an average palm — a soil or leaf test lets you correct the plan to your actual field rather than an average one.
