Arecanut is a heavy feeder with a narrow, shallow root zone — most of it within 60–80cm of the stem — so where and when you apply fertilizer matters almost as much as how much. This guide covers the standard ICAR-CPCRI nutrient schedule for arecanut at every growth stage, then adjusts the timing for Tamil Nadu's own monsoon pattern, which differs from the West Coast conditions most published schedules are written for.

Young Palms — The Dose Ramps Up, Not a Flat Rate

Immature palms don't get the full adult dose. CPCRI field trials (Vittal, Hirehalli, Peechi, Mohitnagar, Kahikuchi) recommend scaling the chemical fertilizer up over the first two years, while organic matter stays at the full rate from year one:

Why Tamil Nadu Needs Its Own Timing

Most published schedules split the annual dose into a pre-monsoon application and a September–October application, timed around the Southwest Monsoon (June–September) carrying the first dose into the soil.

That assumption holds on the West Coast — Kerala and coastal Karnataka get the bulk of their rain from the Southwest Monsoon. Tamil Nadu doesn't. The Western Ghats sit between Erode and the Arabian Sea, so the Southwest Monsoon arrives weak and unreliable here — Tamil Nadu's real rainy season is the Northeast Monsoon, arriving mid-October through November.

The chart below shows the shape of that mismatch: a shallow bump where the generic schedule expects rain, and the real peak arriving four months later.

The second dose is already well-placed — applying in September–October means it's in the ground right as the Northeast Monsoon breaks. It's the first dose that needs rethinking:

The one-line version: keep the same two-dose calendar, but treat the first dose as irrigation-fed, not rain-fed — CPCRI's own field trials note the timing "can be shifted to April–May in irrigated conditions," which describes most Erode-belt farms better than a rain-fed May–June window. If your farm isn't on drip or basin irrigation for that window, the first dose is largely wasted — it sits on dry soil until whatever rain eventually comes.
Before You Apply Anything

Check Your Own Soil Before Assuming Acidic

Most arecanut fertilizer guidance — including the schedule above — is written assuming acidic soil that needs lime. That's the common case on the West Coast, but it isn't universal: parts of Tamil Nadu's interior, including black-soil pockets around Erode, run neutral to alkaline instead, where adding lime does nothing useful and the real gap is usually elsewhere — sulphur, zinc, boron.

Before applying anything: pull your own free soil health card from the Tamil Nadu Agriculture Department's தமிழ் மண்வளம் portal (or your nearest Krishi Vigyan Kendra) and check pH and potassium specifically — a field already running high in potassium doesn't need the standard K₂O dose added on top.

How much fertilizer does a mature areca palm need per year?

The common ICAR-CPCRI reference for a fully bearing adult palm is 100g nitrogen, 40g P2O5 and 140g K2O per year (roughly 220g urea, 200g SSP and 235g MOP), alongside about 12kg FYM/compost and 12kg green leaf manure. Soil and leaf testing should still guide the final programme for your specific field.

How much fertilizer does a young (first or second year) areca palm need?

CPCRI field trials recommend applying only ⅓ of the mature chemical fertilizer dose in the first year after planting and ⅔ in the second year, reaching the full dose from the third year onward. Organic manure (green leaf and compost) is applied at the full rate from year one — it doesn't ramp up the way the chemical dose does.

When should areca fertilizer be applied in Tamil Nadu?

The standard schedule splits the dose into two applications — roughly a third in the pre-monsoon window and the rest with the organic matter in September–October.
